What Makes the Montessori Method
of Teaching Different?
The Montessori method of teaching is a student-centered approach to child development. It encourages exploration and discovery through hands-on activities, allowing children ages two-and-a-half to six years old to develop their natural curiosity and creativity.
Key Tenets of the Montessori Method
The Montessori method is founded on five core principles: respect for the child, self-directed learning, small group instruction, student-paced learning, and a prepared environment.
Respect for the Child
At the heart of the Montessori method is respect for the child. Children are seen as capable, competent individuals who should be allowed to explore their interests and make decisions about their learning.
Self-Directed Learning
In a Montessori classroom, children are encouraged to explore the materials and activities that interest them. This type of self-directed learning allows children to gain control of their own learning and develop self-discipline.
Small Group Instruction
Group size is kept small—typically between three and six students—to ensure each student receives individualized attention.
Student-Paced Learning
The Montessori approach allows children to progress at their own speed while they explore and learn. Teachers provide guidance and support but don’t rush children to move faster than they are ready.
Prepared Environment
The Montessori environment is designed to provide children with a safe and nurturing environment for learning. The classroom is arranged in stations or areas, each focusing on a specific subject or area of exploration.
